Description:Gemma was surrendered to Safe Haven from a local lady that trains dogs, and has boarded and cared for Gemma for the last 18 months. She took Gemma in as a favor to an out-of-state lady that asked her to train Gemma and at the conclusion of the 6 week Board and Train program the original owner decided she no longer was able to care for Gemma because she had her hands full as a singe mom, etc.
Lucky for Gemma, the lady that had been training her, was committed to continue training her and also finding her a new forever home. For the past 18 months Gemma has lived with other dogs, horses, chickens and cats - although she recently did attack a cat, so we are looking for a cat-free home for Gemma. She loves going for "pack walks" with other dogs, and really enjoys dog agility training.
Last summer Gemma was shown in the local 4-H dog show by local youth and did well, winning a trophy! Her months of training has really paid off because Gemma is a delight to be around, and has mastered many basic obedience commands including SIT, LAY DOWN, STAY, WAIT, COME, LEAVE IT, and DROP IT. She seems to LOVE kids, most other submissive dogs, and going on walks.
Gemma spent the first 1 & 1/2 years of her life living in a dog crate - so she does not like to be crated, but luckily is not destructive when left out in the house alone, but does prefer to be with her people when at all possible. Gemma loves to pick her person and will become their shadow. She can be stubborn at times, and at times seems to display 'alpha dog' tendencies - so consistant training and expectations will be best for Gemma. Her caretaker for the past 18 months thinks Gemma would do best in an active home with a big yard, and maybe even another active dog to play with. She also reports that Gemma is extremely smart, and has a very special talent of opening doors and gates - so extra caution must be given to keep Gemma contained inside a home or fenced in yard because she has been known to "free herself' :)
Our volunteers have quickly fallen in love with Gemma....she has the best loving personality, and those distinctive ears are just so darn cute - it seems she cannot really move her left ear as it is always laying down, while her right ear is more erect and reacts to all the sounds around her - it is just so cute!
