Check out this cutie! Joey is estimated to be 2&1/2 years old and most likely some sort of Pit mix, but he is such a cute medium size dog. He is a VERY happy, friendly dog that was found as a stray in Eastern Iowa. The family that originally found Joey, took him to the vet for vaccinations and a Heartworm test (luckily negative!) - and have put some much needed weight on him, because he was quite skinny when they found him. He is now 44 pounds, and coud still stand to put on a few more pounds to finish filling out.
The family that found Joey had a dog that Joey initially got along with, but after a few days, the two dogs decided they did not get along. So after a few weeks of finding Joey, the family knew he needed a different home, and they began reaching out to several different shelters asking them to take Joey in, and Safe Haven was happy to rescue him.
While at Safe Haven Joey has had a few canine friends that also love to run and play - so we are hopeful that he would do okay with other dogs if introduced slowly and properly, but right now he is a bit too rambunctious and reactive to be going to dog parks, etc. Joey is such a great dog though, and we are hoping that he will be fine with a family that may have one other similiar sized dog with a laid back personality and help Joey learn how to be a happy family pet!
Right now Joey seems a bit too interested in the kitties at Safe Haven, so we recommend a family with no cats, or other small pets.
Joey would do great with an active family, as he loves to go for long walks and even a run! While he pulls quite a bit on the leash when leaving his kennel, once outside he is quite enjoyable to walk. We do highly recommend taking a dog obedience class with Joey so he can build up some confidence, learn some new basic obedience skills beyond "sit", and develop a bond with his new family. His previous family report that during the few weeks they had Joey, they found him to be kennel-trained, so he was crated during the day while they were gone, and he also slept in his kennel at night. He does need some work on knowing that he cannot complain so much if left alone. For that reason he would be best not in an apartment, especially with thin walls. Another thing we have learned through a home visit with a family that was hoping to adopt Joey, is that his enthusiam and love of jumping up on people when playing is a bit too much for younger kids - his forever family should have older kids (teen-aged), because as metioned above, Joey still does need to learn proper dog manners through an obedience class. We have really come to love this great young fella, and know that some lucky family will fall in love with Joey too and have a lifetime of great memories!
