Description:

Tyson came to us when his master, who purchased him as an 8 week old puppy from a breeder in Dyke, Iowa, had to move to a home that did not allow pets.  Tyson had previously been an indoor dog and was housebroken; but in  the last couple of years had been displaced by his master having other human relationships and has been in an outdoor kennel.  In spite of the period of time when he lived outside he seems to know that he does not want pee in his kennel. When he has had an extra long confinement without relief he will either direct his pee out of his kennel or use the drain at the back of the kennel.  His housebreaking rules must be still reasonably fresh in his memory.

His previous owner tells us he gets along with other dogs, cats and children and either men or women. We have not really seen any reason to doubt that.   He has been taken into the cat area without any interest in being a bully to the cats.

We thought that his previous owner's description of him as energetic, playful, independent and very intelligent hit the mark.  His favorite thing to do is to chase tennis balls.

When I saw him I questioned if he was perhaps a Belgian Shepherd instead of German Shepherd; BUT in researching online, I found the following website that confirmed all the characteristics I was seeing that made me wonder were indeed those of the more rare black German Shepherd.  The website https://animalso.com/breeds/black-german-shepherd/  has some interesting facts about black German Shepherds that will be useful if you are considering either a standard variety German Shepherd or a black.   In fact, the images online of black German Shepherd could have been made with Tyson as the model.

We are still working with him to get him to understand leash manners and not use his strength to have his own way.   With his intelligence, and consistency, we are confident that too will be something he can learn.
