Description:

We are pleased to introduce Harry! This very handsome boy came into our care after his family made the decision that he needs a home where he can be a beloved indoor companion, but still safely be able to spend time outdoors without fear of him running off. A home with a fenced-in yard would be perfect for this adventure-seeking boy. Although a fenced-in yard isn't necessarily a requirement for his new home, we do know he would do best in an active home where he's able to go on many walks, spend time outside on leash, and just receive all of the necessary love & attention a handsome fella like this deserves while respecting his natural working instincts.

Harry is around three years old, and joined his most recent family after his original owners moved into a smaller home with a smaller yard. He seemed to enjoy being in the country where he had ample space to explore the great outdoors, and although he loves being outside he has a tendency to explore too far from home. His family said he has been known to chase after wildlife like deer and be gone from home for hours, causing them stress about his safety. After his most recent adventure of crossing a very busy highway, they knew it was time to seriously consider finding him a new home before any serious accidents or injuries occurred.

Harry's family filled us in on a few of his personality traits that we feel are important to share with any potential adopter. Harry is a purebred Australian Shepherd - while keeping this working breed in mind and the personality traits that commonly come with this breed, Harry has shown to be protective of "his" property and people. When strangers (like UPS delivery) would arrive on 'his' property, he would often become quite territorial in a protecting manner. We want any future family to be aware of these behaviors as although he may not be portraying these behaviors in the shelter setting where everything and everyone is new to him, once he is in a home setting his territorial instincts may arise again so being able to help him channel these instincts appropriately will be an important part in a successful forever home.

In his short three years of life, Harry has most recently lived with elementary-aged children and had built a bond with them. He did well with another dog in his original home and most recently enjoyed playing with neighbors' dogs. He has never lived with nor had a history with cats. We do our best to try "cat testing" dogs like Harry, whom we don't know how they do around cats. This testing showed to us that Harry would do best in a home WITHOUT cats. He was very reactive towards them through the door with lots barking and growling.

Harry is ready to begin his search for his new forever home. Do we have any Aussie lovers out there looking for their next best boy?! Because we know a family looking for an active, loyal companion will fall in love with this guy! If you're interested in meeting Harry, please complete the online adoption application that can be found on our website at www.wesavepets.com. Once the application has been submitted, a Safe Haven volunteer will be in touch to set up a meet & greet.
