My name is Nanna - I was found wandering down a country highway near Marengo, Ia March 21 2009. A kind family brought me to Safe Haven of Iowa County. I have lots of medical needs. I am aprox 8 years old, I have a condition called Dry Eye in my left eye which requires medication twice a day, I have a large amount of hair loss and some coordination issues with my back legs adn had surgery for Pyometra. I have obviously been used as a breeding dog for a long time and medical care was never done. I don't have much left for teeth but I eat really well!

These nice people are fostering me and for the first time in my life I slept on a human bed, I am in heaven. They took me to a groomer where I got my over grown nails trimmed and a good bath. I can see once again.

UPDATE:  April 2, 2009.  Nanna had her surgery yesterday and is back home again with her foster family.  It will take some time for her to bounce back but she is going to feel so much better.  Her uterus was indeed filled with infection.

We expect a full recovery.  We will continue to update her page as she progresses and becomes available for adoption.

Update April 21, 2009:
Nanna has completly recovered from her surgery.  She continues to lose hair but the vets are hopeful that she will grow some of it back once her hormones are balanced.  She will be checked for Cushings disease in late May if her hair has not grown back.

Nanna is coming out of her shell more and more everyday.  Loud noises and sudden movements still cause her to freeze but when she is comfortable she will wag her tail and play a little with the other dogs.

She is looking for a quiet home where she can "get away" when she needs to.

She does good around older children who respect her need for space.

She hates being in a kennel and will bark for the first few minutes but eventually settles down once her foster family leaves.  She would not be ideal in a condo or apartment becuase of her barking.

She is only in a kennel when her foster family has to leave for a few hours.  Nanna sleeps in bed with her foster family and sleeps the entire night.

We are working on potty training with some success.  We are hopeful that she will be able to overcome living in a crate her whole life and be able to be fully potty trained over time.  Its more difficult with older dogs that come from a puppy mill but for the right family with patience and understanding she will be the perfect addition to any family.

She no longer fears walking over linoleum and has now mastered the stairs with flying colors.  She still isn't happy about  a leash so a fenced yard is a must.

Nanna has a gentle soul and is a wonderful dog.  With time and patience she will make a wonderful addition to an experienced dog family.
