Petey is a 75 pound Rottweiler/Lab/American Staffordshire Terrier mix that is 3&1/2 years old. This is his third time at Safe Haven, after his first 2 adoptions proved to not be the best home for Petey.  We know now that this big boy is looking for a home without children or other animals at this time. While he has lived with them in the past, he needs a home with few distractions in order to get the attention he deserves and desires. Petey does love most other dogs, but has a rough play style and has shown some resource guarding with his food, toys and even his owner.

Petey bonds closely to one person, and needs guidance working through insecurities and gaining confidence. He has shown some fear-based reactive tendencies when he feels uncomfortable or threatened.  Men and strangers in general scare him the most. Once you gain his trust, Petey is the most loving and loyal companion - but it takes time. He has bonded extremely closely with the staff member at Safe Haven who has been primarily been working with Petey for over 6 months with behavior modification training using postive rewards based training methods.

Much of Petey's insecurities are heightened because of the stresses of shelter life in a kennel.  There is only so much progress he can make here - which is why we're looking to place him in a foster home or possibly the right adoptive home.

Petey is working on muzzle training which allows us to begin slowly expanding his world and exposing him to new stimuli while wearing a rubber basket muzzle, without risking Petey's or the public's safety. We've been working closely with Liz Ford, certified trainer and owner at Best Friends Dog Academy in Iowa City. Petey has had several behavioral consults with her at the shelter and she has established a reformative behavior plan for him.  She is also willing to work with his foster/adoptive owner to set them up for success.

Petey LOVES car rides, long walks, cuddling, stuffed toys (to destroy), cozy blankets, and most food.

We are looking for an experienced, knowledgeable, dedicated, and patient individual to continue Petey's training and be his best friend. He needs structure and guidance in his new home. If you think you could be the right fit for Petey, please submit an application at  Any questions can be sent to Katie Valentine at
