Lewis came to Safe Haven because he could no longer live with his family.  His family loved him a great deal and he enjoyed living on an acreage.  Lewis spent a lot of time outside, but at times he was also inside the home where his family says he had great manners. He keeps his kennel pristine and always waits to do his business until he is outside.

Unfortunately Lewis was not cut out to be an unsupervised farm dog as he became too interested in some neighborhood lambs.  So the family made the difficult decision to bring Lewis to Safe Haven so that he could find a new family that will be a better fit for him.

Lewis is a great dog, first family taught him a few manners, but he does need help learning his leash manners - right now he is quite the puller on his walks, which he absolutely loves!  The family did let us know that Lewis's parents were a yellow Lab and a Weimaraner, and he is absolutely a beautiful boy.  He is a great all around dog that seems to love every person he meets.   He takes treats nicely from small people:).

Lewis was raised with cats and at least one other dog, At the shelter he is choosey about what other dogs he likes, even though he lived comfortably with a dachshund at his previous home.  Outside of the shelter environment he may accept more dogs, but an adopting family should be sure to see if he likes any dogs they have before making a decision.

Lewis came to us with a break of his rear left leg. We have taken him to a speciality clinic and they have noted that he will always have the limp due to how the break/muscles have healed - the leg is now simply shorter than the others and surgery will not correct this. It does not seem to cause Lewis any pain as noted by 2 different veterinarians. On his last vet visit, it was noted that dogs with the type of injury Lewis had could be more susceptible to their patella slipping out of place than a dog who's leg had never been injured, so that is something his new family will just want to watch for, but he should be able to lead a normal, playful life.

Lewis spent a month in the home of a wonderful potential new family.  He bonds easily with people and all went well until he was left in the house for a full afternoon and suffered  separation anxiety. Being alone in a home was most likely a new experience for Lewis, and he did not handle it well. Lewis was used to being able to be a more independent dog who got lots of exercise outdoors, and we wonder if this might be what Lewis is still craving.  Obviously he can't be unattended outdoors if your neighbors have baby livestock, but we are sure there is a good home somewhere with people who want to have the abundant love he gives and who will provide the environment he needs to handle separation when it is necessary.
