Sophie is a sweet little Chiweenie (Chihuahua / Dachshund) dog who would make someone a great laid back, quiet dog.  When we take her to adoption events at PetCo she sits primly on our laps all three hours!  She does not seem to like big dogs sticking their noses in her face, but she is fine with children approaching her and petting her.  She does seem to be happiest if she is an only pet in the house as she doesn't seem to care for other dogs or cats much at all.  She has had a few dog friends while at Safe Haven, but it takes a lot of time and patience for her to become comfortable around them.

When Sophie first came to Safe Haven she was in pretty rough shape, including having chronic ear infections, fairly sparse hair/fur over most of her body, and pretty bad "gunky" eyes.  Most of these conditions were brought under control with regular visits to our vet - and she started looking great!  However she was still experiencing eye irritations, so after a couple different treatments from the regular vet, she was sent to see an eye specialist in Cedar Rapids that diagnosed her with Chronic Dry Eyes, and prescribed special drops that are really helping and her eyes look great.  These eye drops will be something that Sophie will likely need the rest of her life, so if you are considering adopting Sophie, there will be ongoing treatment needed, and if interested we will discuss further details regarding Sophie's eye drops.

In order to help with the chronic ear infections that the vet feels she has dealt with throughout her life before coming to Safe Haven, Sophie was recently started on an allergy tablet as well as a new strict diet - consisting only of a   special food (Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Bison), since the vet reports that the majority of ear infections are actually casued by allergies.  This regimen seems to be helping because many volunteers report that Sophie seems a bit more spunky lately and no real ear issues have been noted since starting this new food - so we are hopeful this may be just what Sophie needed to be more comfortable!

We truly feel like there is a perfect home out there for Sophie, and luckily she has an amazing family that has fallen in love with her, and have agreed to financially sponsor Sophie's food and medicines while she is with us!  What a generous gift, because if you are interested in adopting Sophie you should be aware that her food and medicines can run around $150 a month, so adopting Sophie will require a commitment of not only unconditional love, but also a financial commitment to be able to continue to provide for her medical needs.  We know there is a special home out there for our Miss Sophie - so she can live out her retirement years in a loving home - so please share her info and let's get her a home of her own!
